Decreasing Dialysis Patient-Provider Conflict (DPC)

Network 8 Position Statement on Involuntary Discharge

The Network 8 Board of Directors at their August 2006 meeting adopted the DPC (Decreasing Dialysis Patient-Provider Conflict) position statement on involuntary discharge, based on a recommendation from the Medical Review Board and following a comment period in which all medical directors, nurse managers, and social workers were invited to respond to the document. The statement replaces the Network 8 position statement adopted in 1990 and revised in 1997.

The DPC task force worked under CMS auspices to produce a framework for addressing conflict in the dialysis setting. The taskforce created the statement to give providers guidance for the ethical, legal and regulatory issues surrounding the involuntary discharge of ESRD patients by physicians or certified dialysis facilities. They also created a training kit to promote ongoing in-service training in skills designed to de-escalate interpersonal conflict.
