Facility-specific Quality Assessment and Improvement Project - Optimizing Anemia Outcomes
A routine diagnosis for the ESRD patient, anemia impacts virtually all body systems. Common complications associated with anemia are shortness of breath, fatigue, impaired oxygen delivery to tissues, cardiac enlargement and impaired immune system response. Common causes of anemia include erythropoietin deficiency, blood loss, iron deficiency, inflammatory conditions and vitamin deficiencies.
Following the June 2011 FDA black-box warning and subsequent changes in the CMS Quality Incentive Payment, the 2011-2012 anemia project focuses on assisting facilities having > 20% of patients with hemoglobin greater than 12.0 gm/dL.
If you have questions or need assistance anemia management, please call Sheila McMaster at 601-936-9260.
